I Read It, But I Don’t Get It: Comprehension Strategies for Adolescent Readers

Cris Tovani’s I Read It, But I Don’t Get It: Comprehension Strategies for Adolescent Readers is no doubt an essential read for present and future educators. "I Read It, but I Don't Get It is a practical, engaging account of how teachers can help adolescents develop new reading comprehension skills"(GoodReads). I’m still perplexed at the thought of having to teach middle school to high school students how to understand what they’ve read. Students can read a novel and now fully understand why I am having them read it or the underlying lesson behind it. I had this experience in school myself when we did our Catcher In The Rye lessons, I never comprehended why I needed to read this novel and my instructor did not really help me comprehend it.

My perplexity really is partial, especially towards any future students that pass through my classroom that are not as proficient in reading/writing as in other subjects of school. Or my students who have specific reading difficulties. I got into part two, section eight of I Read It, But I Don’t Get It, ‘Outlandish Responses: Taking Inferences Too Far’ made me feel like I do not know anything about the subject of English however, that pushed me into learning and discovering more. Of course, I managed to dig a bit deeper into my history as a high school English student and realized, I had to be frequently taught in the numerous approaches of critical reading and analysis. We ended up reading many stories that I connected with on an emotional level, that emotional connection helped me comprehend stories and dig into the deeper meanings of stories. I would like to push my students with my new knowledge to comprehend what they’re reading, I would like them to take away from each story.
